Hell - Gehenna by Pastor Dan Maines

Remember "hell" is Gehenna. It is Not eternal torment in a after life. The wicked do not have after life. Gehenna or if you have to call it "Hell" is a national judgment. This came upon Jerusalem in the first century. The only people ever threatened with Gehenna were the Judean Jews of Jesus' generation.

The concept of Hell can't possibly be true. I cannot imagine how anyone came up with something so horrific. The terrible pain of burning in fire, while fully conscious is made up by man, not God. It would take greed to inflict that on anyone. That cannot be God. How could such cruelty and sadism be consistent with a God of love? I don't buy it for a minute.

Yes the word "Hell" is in the bible but the concept of "Hell" is not. Jesus talked about Gehenna not "Hell" The word "Hell" was not invented until 725 AD per Wikipedia. So what was the word used in its place for the first 7 centuries? It was "Gehenna" The English word 'hell', though a more correct translation would be 'underworld' or 'world of the dead'. So, if you're dead, guess what? you're dead! you no longer exist. Other countries have corrected the meaning of "Hell" for example Germany Proto-Germanic *xaljō were reinterpreted to denote the underworld in Christian mythology, for which see Gehenna.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

Those who trust in Christ don't perish (die) Those that don't trust in Christ will die. If you're dead your dead. How can you be anywhere else? So that means the one that doesn't trust in Christ does not have everlasting life anywhere else like some make up to be hell. If Jesus wanted us to know that sinners went to hell, don't you think it would say so right here. Another point, the Greek word "perish" is used literally of death.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
Death is dead not eternal punishing and torment in some place called "Hell." The context is Adam would result in "the death," and those faithful in Christ have eternal life. This is about death and eternal life, not eternal torture.
