Why do people believe the world is coming to an end? by Pastor Dan Maines

Many Christians and non Christians were taught that the world would come to and end at the second coming of Jesus.  I can tell you right now that the bible says nothing about the world coming to and end physically.  The only thing that come to an end is the old covenant world.  I'll get straight to the point.  See also The World Will NEVER End

"One generation passes away, and another generation comes; but the earth abides forever." (Eccl. 1:4)

Is the bible wrong?  It clearly says the earth will last forever.  Want more proof?

The name of Christ shall continue as long as the sun! "His name shall endure forever; His name shall continue as long as the sun. And men shall be blessed in Him; All nations shall call Him blessed." (Psalm 72:17)

Here we're told that Christ's name will last forever, just like the sun.

He says the same for the moon. "In his days the righteous shall flourish, and abundance of peace, until the moon is no more. (Psalm 72:7) Israel, had no concept of the end of the world. They knew God's promise concerning the physical universe that it would never end.  So why do some people think it does come to and end?  The answer is religion has taught them what to believe.

Not only has God chosen not to end the world, he also stated he would not destroy all the wicked as he once did during the flood. Gen. 6:5-7 ,12-13.

The Bible says God has given Christ a name which is above every name that is named, not only in this age, (meaning that present Jewish world/age, which ended in A.D. 70) but also in the age to come (the age which followed the Jewish age, i.e. the current Christian age). Further, the age to come, is the world or "age" without end. (Ephesians 3:21)

Genesis 8:21 (NKJV)
And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, "I will never again curse the ground for man's sake, although the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.

Not only did God promise never to destroy all living things, he also promised that while the earth remained it would remain under his protective care with promises of food supply, and the cosmic essentials to sustain life on the planet would never cease.

It's religion that teaches end of the world is near not the bible.  The bible actually teaches the very opposite.  Yet Pastors coming out of seminary school still want to teach the world is coming to an end.  Do you think they do that to keep you coming to church and take your money?  I do.

The belief that the world will end some day is a distraction and leads to escapism.  Escapism is describes as the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy. Or habitual diversion of the mind to purely imaginative activity or entertainment as an escape from reality or routine.  This distraction has no religious or spiritual basis, and therefore results in an abandonment mentality.

These types of people approach the Bible as if it were written to them ignoring what we call audience relevance.  They read it as if  it was penned in our own generation and time.  Most Christians and non Christians fail to properly understand eschatology they see it all as physical and material while the New Testament is mostly spiritual.  Where they fail is on covenant transformation.  In other words, "covenant eschatology" is the more accurate Biblical teaching.

Covenant eschatology is the transition from Israel's Old Covenant of sin and death, often called the ministration of death (2 Cor. 3) or Torah, to the new covenant (ministration of life). It is the making of a new world of righteousness in which "the sin" under which man fell in the Garden is removed through Christ by his death and parousia ("second" coming).

Many bibles call "age" "world" and that's how people get trapped into thinking the world will someday end.  The only world "age" that came to and end was predicted in the bible It was the old covenant world.   There are only two worlds the old covenant world and the new covenant world.  Sound confusion?  The new covenant world has no end. Heaven and earth have already passed away.  Heaven and earth are symbolic for Israel and the old covenant and that world has passed away in 70 AD.

After the new heaven and earth, God's holy city new Jerusalem, which is spiritual and the church has come down out of heaven to be with men on earth, (Revelation 21:1-3) we yet find wickedness in the earth. Consider what God says of those outside the holy city.

Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie. (Revelation 22:14-15)

Did you catch that you enter through the gates of that city the spiritual new Jerusalem.  This spiritual city is on earth now.  Find it people!

The promise of the continuation of the physical world is so strongly embedded in the character of God, that it is tied to heaven itself.   There is no eschatology for the Christian age. You cannot have an end to that which has no end.

Conclusion:

Scriptures teach that the cosmic world as we know it will continue to exist without end.  We  have shown that unbelievers will continue on earth but remain outside of the holy city of God the spiritual Kingdom also called New Jerusalem unless they repent of their deeds until their probation ends in death.  Christians are in the Earthly Kingdom now and when we die we go to the Heavenly Kingdom.   I hope you see other studies on our site ../index.html  especially How to Read the Bible    howtoreadbible.html
